Binging will be giu at 10 o’clock A. M. —A severe wind and rain storm struck this section yesterday af ternoon, also a small amount of ha I was seen to fall. Although it was the hardest wind in some yt i.i it; no serious damage is reported. The feed barn of a Mrs. Hutchens near town was blown down; several branches ol trees broken off; one largo Jr falling on Mr. T A. Logan’ na rt of H rh i WILLIAMS ESCAPED WITH A FINE N. Glenn Williams the . Yadhin county distiller, will : not serve a penal sentence. Instead lie will pay $800 in ! court costs immediately and * with this requirement met Judge James E. Boyd will im , pose a hue. Thomas C. Crafts ! indicted and tried and convict jointly with Williams was * given his freedom. j The case was called for final, | disposition in the United ' States court, and after hear ing motions of counsel for a i new trial, a statement from | Williams and argument of, j Williams’ counsel, Judge Boyd ; decreed that N. Glenn Will Tains should pay the costs of ■ i the case withm the next few j j days and upon arranging this j ' stated that lie would pass sen- j tence, with a proviso that said sentence should -be held in j &beyence from term .to term, j so as to give Williams oppor- j tunity to pay the fine, which \ under the statute cannot he j less than $1,000. Williams’. i attorneys stated that they could arrange to pay the $800 in costs within a day or so. Crafts was given his liberty without costs or fine. Both Williams and Crafts were con victed in the Federal Court here two years ago for con spiracy to defraud the govern ment in tlic purchase of stamps ! at the Williams .postoffice in j Yadkin county. Mrs, Crafts j was acquited by the jury! which held Mr. Crafts andj Mr. Williams guilty. In passing judgement on N.. Glenn Williams, Monday, J udge Boyd spoke with some feeling of the cry which was raised around him for ven gance of a humiliating sort, \ which meant nothing less than \ to .put Williams in prison ! • . - i stripes. This Judge Boyd de-j dined to do and in giving his j reasons, preached a sermon! that cut both ways. Will iams ha* been pursued quite relentlessly by political and personal enemies, and being a man of a 'combative disposi tion, it was but natural that! he should strike back. In do- j iug this, he but invited a com-j pounding of his haras-sments. There were people in Raleigh during the time the efforts were made to break up Will iams, who would have burned him at the stake and who would have danced with joy as he burned. Yet the offense for which Judge Boyd was ad vised to send him to the peni tentiary, was an alleged plot j to defraud the government in the purchase of stamps. In this case the prosecution fail ed to prove conspiracy. The whole prejudice against Will iams grew out of his inherit ance of the Old Nick Williams whiskey business and his per haps too persistent efforts to keep it going. But in the face of this prejudice, it must be I admitted, as Judge Byum | claimed, that Williams is hon ' est and law-abiding. Nor is there any doubt about the fact 1 that Judge Boyd meant it when he said that if Williams had Ween convicted of violating umal revenne laws, he ave got the same j udg others so convicted— Alleghany Man “Charmed” By a Snake ! Sam Brown, while out in the field grubbing Monday, was charmed by a pilot snake. He was working close to the ! snake and when he first saw it the snake was coiled, 'with its mouth open, looking him straight in the eyes. As soon as he caught the snake’s eyes a strange feeling passed over him. He was unable to move or take his eyes off the snake until his dog came between him and the snake aud at tracted the snakes attention. Then he was able to get away. He was strangely affected and could hardly get home, a dis tance of only a few hundred yards, without staggering and falling, and since he has been right sick.—Sparta Star. --— - - Three Stingy Men It is said that three of the stingiest men in the state were in town yesteraay. One of them will not drink as much water as lie' .’wants un less it be from another man’s well. The second forbids any of his family from writing any thing but a /‘small hand” as it is a waste of ink to make large letters. The third stops his clock at night in order to save the wear and tear on the machinery. All of them de cline to take their county pap er on the ground that it is a terrible strain on their s]>ee tacles to read newspapers, even in the day time.—Mocksville Herald. -- May Establish Dry Prizery The Farmers Union of Yad kin county are contemplating the erection of a Dry Prize 1*3* some where in this county. At their meeting here June 3, a committee was elected to go to Stokes County and investi gate the one over there, and the methods employed in run ning it, and report their find ings here at a later meetiug, this committee being compos ed of Messrs. R. M. Fletcher, I. D. Bowman and A. S. Spear. Another object of this com mittee i.s to ascertain wheather or not it pays the farmers to pool their tobacco, and tnis will be the principal tiling considered in deciding wheth er they will establish the priz ery in Yadkin or not. While 111 session here they also elected delegates to the State Union meeting to be held at Raleigh August £7-29. Mr. R. M. Fletcher and we were unable to learn who the others were. Air Line Progressing Sheriff W. T. Fletcher just recieved a letter from Mr. D. M. Ausley treasurer and gen eral manager of the Statesville Air Line Railway Company at Statesville N. C. Stating that the grading the road near South Yadkin River and will complete the grading to the grading to the River in the next three months also stated that they would complete the survey from Yadkinville to Boonville soon.— Boonville Herald. .— --—■ -- I _ , a penitentiary sentence.
